Quilling my garden

It is no surprise that I love flowers and enjoying quilling flowers of different kinds. I am an avid gardener and have had the pleasure of tending to huge gardens in the various houses that I have lived in. These past weeks I was browsing through all my old photo albums and the pictures of the gardens and flowers inspired me to come up with these creations. The orchid and the bunch of yellow flowers are an inspiration from Inna’s creation.
I have had a lot of comments on people wanting to learn this wonderful art and I am happy to teach. Please do send me an email using the contact page on this blog. It is so convenient to pursue this hobby as most of the big cities have shops which carry quilling supplies.

If you are in a city other than Chennai and pursue this hobby I would love for you to post the name of the shop, address and phone number of your favorite quilling supply shop.
Enjoy the flowers and keep the comments coming.

Quilling with a comb

In my continuing endeavor to master more techniques, I worked with the quilling comb to create flowers. I learned the basics of this from this link, and though there is a specialized comb it can also be done with a regular comb. The flowers created from the comb has a very unique look and can then be combined to create other designs. Some of the cards I have created this month use the quilling comb. I am also excited to share a card that my grand daughter made for her teacher(the last one in this album). It is always nice when she shares her creations with me and it feels good to have this creative connection with her.

Quilling with a touch of beads

May is a month of celebrations in my family with a lot of birthdays and anniversary and of course mother’s day. I was busy making an array of cards and I noticed a box of beads in my collection. I have not done much with it and decided to try adding them on some of my cards. I quite enjoyed incorporating the beads in the cards and I think the result was good. As I made these cards I thought it is so wonderful to make hand made cards, as I am able to quill things, that the person I am giving to, enjoys. I particularly enjoyed making the cup of coffee with the beans and just like my day cannot begin without a cup of java, the person I made it for shares the same sentiment.

Anything creative that is around the house can be incorporated with quilled cards and the possibilities are endless

Easter Cards

I enjoy creating cards with flowers and traditional designs, but this month my grand daughter requested I make some cards celebrating Easter. I had to deviate from my comfort zone and created a couple of Easter cards for her and she was very happy to receive them.

Familiarity is always comforting but in creativity it is sometimes good to go out of that comfort zone, take risks and create things not done before. I was very happy to do the Easter Cards and I will definitely keep that in mind and look for inspiration from newer sources when working on future projects.

Step out of the comfort zone and look for ideas where you never thought possible.

Inspiration from interests

I have a lot of interests apart from quilling, I learned to sew and knit at a young age and have created many a dress for my children. It was the age before ready made clothes and we had to buy material, sew and embellish with our own embroidery or patch work designs. I also learned how to knit and have done many a project. Rangoli, the art of making decorative designs with rice flour, sand or even flower petals is one of my very favorite things to do. The designs can range from simple designs to elaborate ones and even that of Hindu deities. Cooking is another of my passions and I have always enjoyed following and creating recipes.

All of these interests and passions have inspired me in my latest hobby of quilling and this month my cards are a reflection of one of my interests, Rangoli. A lot of the cards and bags have been inspired by traditional Rangoli designs that I draw even today on a daily basis. When I am looking for new ideas for my quilling projects I reach into my past and think about my other interests, and see how I can draw inspiration from them.

Whenever you are starved of ideas for your projects reach in and explore your other passions and great works of joy will unfold. Keep getting inspired from your interests!!

Happy Valentine’s Day

It has now been over a year since I started my blog and I have totally enjoyed creating the cards and spreading this joy each time I give one of my hand made cards for an occasion. The creative journey has enriched my mind, keeps me active and I am enthused to learn and get better. This month my cards reflect this new knowledge. I have adopted a technique where I use multistrip scrolls. My thanks to Susan of Susan’s Quilling site where I learned this tutorial.
Of course it is hard to forget that February brings Valentine’s day and I have card for that occasion as well. Thanks to all the folk who encouraged me by regularly visiting my blog and sending me suggestions, I am always eager to hear your feedback on all the creations you see.
Until the next time keep creating!

Happy Pongal

Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated in southern India but this day is celebrated in various parts of India as well. It is celebrated as Lohri, Uttarayana,Magh Bihu and Makar Sankranthi among others, it signifies the end of the traditional farming season. Pongal means “boiling over”and to symbolize a good harvest, rice is cooked in a new pot until it boils over. Pongal is also the name of the sweet dish made on this day by boiling together rice , milk, lentils, jaggery, and cardamom. It also has an astronomical significance as it heralds the Sun’s movement northward for a six month period.
My cards take their inspiration from this festival and here is wishing you all a very Happy Pongal.

Happy Holidays

This a time of joy, festivity and holidays! Of course ,a wonderful excuse to quill…

Quilling a Xmas tree was certainly tricky. There are ,of course, many artistic ways in which this can be done .I attempted one with a board and pins and it is a little crooked!

The colors of Xmas dominate the cards this month greens, reds and gold.

A merry Xmas and a wonderful new year to one and all! Happy Holidays!

Diwali – Festival of Lights

Happy Deepavali to everyone!

The festival of lights is certainly inspiring. The theme, of triumph of good over evil, always fills people with hope. You only have to look at the lamps and of course the sweets, to start getting ideas to make cards! It is one of the important festival for Indians all over, and a time when we meet friends and family and exchange greetings, sweets and good cheer. A hand made quilled Diwali card will certainly add more spark to the day. Here is my collection of cards for this month with Diwali as the theme.

Stretching the imagination

I have been busy these last few weeks and the result is that I have combined my postings for September and October…. Nothing kept me away quilling though!

I tried a few new techniques and surfaces .I made a few cards and bags.Bags are the flavor of the season as they make interesting ” tamboolam bags” for Navarathri. Here are a few pictures of the bags.

I am currently in Australia and of course a trip to the craft shop is high on my ” to do ” list. I was rummaging through the shelves of ” spotlight” ( a craft and haberdashery shop ) and found hardboard cutouts in interesting shapes for scrap booking and I wondered how it would serve as a base for fridge magnets .I got a few of them as they were quite cheap and as luck would have it there was a packet of magnetic dots that were on sale as well! I created my first fridge magnet(flower design inspired by creations in http://manuk.ro/en/)
This is the result…….

Going through a few more aisles I came across stretched canvasses. My imagination went a bit further and the temptation of quilling on surfaces larger than cards got quite strong and I bought a pack of four 20x20cm stretched canvas.
I started out to do a bowl of fruit but ended up with a bunch of grapes! It was a joint project with my daughter who shares my love for quilling.

A few cards got made as well,in addition to the other exciting projects .

Until next time, keep stretching that imagination!
