Teaching is a joy

I enjoy spending time with all my grandchildren in different ways and each one has hobbies that I try to learn a little about so I can be a part of their life. During one of her visits in summer my 9 year old granddaughter observed me quilling and was intrigued by what it was, and asked if she could do it to. So of course I decided to teach her and at that time I was quilling designs for about 40 bags so I appreciated all the help. She caught on to it quite well and helped me everyday and it was very enjoyable and we built some great memories together.

She went back and insisted her mother get her a first quilling set and she made a card for my birthday and sent it to me, it was quite special. This summer she decided to help me in another project, by making all the basic shapes and here I have some pictures of her creations and the other cards that I have made show how you can take those basic shapes and create designs as complicated or simple that your imagination dreams.

The art of quilling is mastering the basic shapes and then letting your imagination take flight in creating other designs with them. I am happy I was able to expose this art to her and maybe someday when she is old and gray like me it will keep her busy, active and engaged like it does for me. I hope you too will be inspired to share your hobby with another and you will see that it will enrich your life as much as it does theirs.

Quilling Supplies in Chennai

In my early days of quilling I carried the supplies for my projects from Australia, after all that is where I was introduced to and developed this hobby of paper quilling. I estimated fairly well how much I would need and thought I was well equipped for a while, but I experimented a fair bit and soon found I was running out of strips of paper and other things I needed. Being dependent on my daughter for the supplies seemed a bit tedious so I decided to look in Chennai for sources. To my surprise I found this store called ‘TINA’ Art & Craft shop in Vadapalani and was surprised to find that they carried quilling essentials like various color paper strips, tools etc. It was a great find and I am happy to be self sufficient in Chennai where I can get all my supplies.

Below are some pictures of the shop and creations I made after stocking up from TINA. If you know of other quilling suppliers in India please do write the details by commenting to this posting.

I am also on the look out for fellow quillers who share a passion of this craft in Chennai and will be excited to view your creations and learn a little about how you developed this hobby. If you happen to read this posting and would like to meet please do send me a mail through my Contact page.

Don’t keep your hobby on hold for lack of supplies, look around and explore your city and you are sure to find what you need to be creative.

Quilling on terracota

The art of quilling is done with paper, and on paper, but imagination is the limit when it comes to applying this art on other mediums. Like the saying goes “when life throws lemons make lemonade”, I had a few nice terracotta pots with me but I wanted to enhance it by adding something to its plain exterior. I thought why not try and quill something on it and thus began my experimentation with this and the result is the creations you see below.

It was not very different from quilling on paper but the only requirement was that when quilling on pottery they have to be glazed. The smooth surface renders itself very well to the quilled creations adhering to it.

Hope this inspires you to try quilling on other mediums. I would love to see your creations so please do share them on my blog.

Quilling Jewellery

Jewellery has fascinated women since time immemorial and it is something that transcends cultures and countries. Even little girls show an affiliation to it at a very young age. Jewellery has been made with all types of mediums whether it is metals, natural fiber or paper.

Quilling jewellery is but a natural extension of this love of jewellery. Whether it is jewellery that can be actually worn or cards that show this, creativity is at its best here. These are some cards that show this universal love.

The next time you want to gift something unique, look for quilled jewellery and you won’t go wrong with that choice.

It’s the season of celebration

I have always sent handmade cards to my friends and family during birthdays, anniversaries and other important occasions and these past years have been no different. I now send them cards with my quilling creations and it is a perfect opportunity to better my techniques. I think about what the particular person likes and enjoys doing and this forces me to sometimes dig deeper, do more research, browse more sites and come up with cards that will truly bring a smile to their face.

I hope you enjoy my collection and in this day of e-cards and text message greetings a handmade card will be long remembered and cherished.

Gift Bags, Tags & Pouches

Gift Bags, Money Pouches & Gift Tags

Whether it is a simple occasion or a grand event receiving and giving gifts is part of all festivities. Whether the gift is money or an article, these days the containers that hold the gifts are as elegant as the gift itself. Gone are the days when people gave gifts in just any envelope or bag. When I started quilling I initially did restrict myself to making cards but one day I had to give a gift to somebody and found only a plain envelope at hand when I realized quilling on an envelope or a plain paper bag would personalize the gift even more.

I began experimenting with quilling on plain bags and I quickly realized the possibilities are endless as the designs can be made as simple or elaborate as you wish.My daughter liked the bags so much that she took them with her to the US where she uses it as ‘Tamboolam’ bag(a return gift bag given during the festival season). A plain simple bag becomes so unique and a keepsake in itself. I have also created gift tags and money pouches.

I hope this inspires you put in that extra special touch in everything that you create.

Reusing invitation cards

My daughter-in-law who is an event planner helps design a lot of wedding cards and I collect some of the samples and try to reuse them. I am always fascinated how a simple card can be taken to the next level with just a little touch of creativity.

This particular card had the gorgeous lotus on it and I decided to add the ‘Aum’ symbol and other decorative touches to it and create a card. The ‘Aum’ symbol which is thought to embody the essence of the universe and the lotus which symbolizes the place of Brahma’s birth are very auspicious symbols in Hinduism.

Om and Lotus Card

The second card that I reused lent it itself to having a single motif and I decided to create the traditional mango design. Hope these creations inspire you to take a second look at the invitations that you receive.

Hello Quilling world!

I decided to call the title of this post ‘Hello Quilling world!’. This is my first ever post and am excited to be starting this new project at the age of 73. I hope to connect with my fellow quilling enthusiasts both in India and around the world.

I have been quilling for about 3 years now and have decided to start my own little blog to showcase my creations.

I worked on this project with my daughter and together we created this card on the occasion of Dusserah. I was inspired to do the craft after visiting this site. It depicts Goddess Durga who is worshiped during this festival.
